The Truth About Towels: Why Going Organic Matters More Than You Think

When we think of a soft, fluffy towel, we usually imagine comfort. But have you ever wondered what gives most towels that “super absorbent” feel straight off the shelf? Unfortunately, it’s often the result of chemical coatings applied during the finishing process - substances that make the fabric temporarily more absorbent and bright but can later wash out and irritate the skin.

Research has shown that synthetic softeners, resins, and surfactants commonly used in conventional towels can cause skin dryness, mild irritation, or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals - especially when applied to freshly cleansed skin with open pores after a shower.

At Wellowtea, we chose a different path. Our towels are made from 100% organic cotton, produced by a GOTS-certified manufacturer without any chemical treatments, silicones, or artificial softeners. What you feel is the pure texture of cotton, and what your skin touches is simply nature.

Naturally Absorbent – and Only Gets Better

Unlike chemically treated towels that lose absorbency over time, organic cotton becomes more absorbent with each wash. When you first use your Wellowtea towel, it might feel slightly less absorbent - that’s completely natural. After around three washes, you’ll notice a remarkable improvement as the cotton fibres relax and the natural pores open.

If you’d like to accelerate this process, simply soak your towel in cool water overnight before the first wash. This helps the fibres bloom and release any remaining spinning oils naturally. Then wash it at 30-40°C with a mild, non-bio detergent - no fabric softener needed.
